invitation to SALSERAS and SALSEROS from around Australia and beyond to be part of

the  breathtaking salsa dance extravaganza known as ...

THE ANNUAL TROPICANA NATIONAL SALSA COMPETITION

The 2nd TROPICANA national salsa dance competition - RULES & REGULATIONS

1) The salsa dance competition is FREE (no fee) and open to anyone over the age of 16 who dances Salsa regardless of gender, nationality or experience.

2) There will be 2 categories introduced in 2005 to distinguish between performance levels:
Professional Category:
Our definition of a professional salsa dancer is anyone who receives or has received payment as a salsa dance performer or salsa dance instructor anywhere in the world.
Students/ amateur Category:
Only open to dancers who have never received payment as a professional salsa dance performer or salsa dance instructor. Students are encouraged to enter this competition.

3) The competition will be in Salsa “street dance” and is only open to couples and not teams.

4) NO WALK UP ENTRIES PERMITTED. All competitors MUST read and sign the registration and rules and regulations forms confirming that both of you have understood all conditions of entry including liability waiver. Only competitors that have returned signed form will be eligible to enter competition.

5) Salsa is danced in many styles in different countries; therefore couples may choose to dance in any style e.g. Linear or circular styles, on 1 or on 2. Competitors will be judged fairly and impartially without favouritism towards any particular beat, style, or region.

6) Stylish, ornate costumes are encouraged.

7) All registered contestants are entitled to free entry to the Tropicana Festival for the entire weekend even if eliminated on the Saturday preselection heat.

8) It is expected that all competitors will act professionally, ethically and sportsmanlike at all times prior, during and after the competition.

9) Competitors who are late or do not answer when announced will not be permitted to compete.

10) Props are not allowed on Saturday 22 January during free style pre-selection heat. However, props can be used in the choreography routine. Organisers need to authorise props prior to competition so please fill out information requested on registration form.

11) Entrants will only be allowed to start over if there has been a technical problem that is out of competitor’s control.

12) Should any issues arise, please direct queries to organisers NOT judges.

13) Entrants must be in attendance at least 1 hour before the competition. Please report to the stage door of the Adelaide Festival Centre where you will be collected by stage management.

14) All competitors will have access to a 10 minute rehearsal space on Saturday ONLY (not Sunday)
Times will be allocated once registration forms have been received.

15) NO Videos will be allowed. Official Photographs and Video footage will be recorded on both days, filming and photos will take place back stage (vox pops) and of performances on stage. All competitors will be asked to sign permission slips to be recorded before the competition by signing release forms.

16) Salsa dance presentations must be of a tasteful nature and must not be associated or depict racist, pornographic, sexist or violent content. Offensive material will result in a disqualification from judges.

17) All dancers entering this competition shall indemnify La Bomba Productions and the Adelaide Festival Centre from and against any claim, action, suit damage, cost, loss, expense or liability of any kind however suffered or incurred in respect of any loss of life, personal injury, loss or damage to property or other loss whatsoever arising as a result of any breach of law and any negligent or wrongful act or omission of the dancers occurring in connection with participation in the competition.

 


JUDGING METHODS:


1) The organizers have chosen judges who have the ability to recognize quality dancing and will judge fairly and impartially without favouritism towards any particular beat, style, or region.

2) All judges are active in Australia’s dance and salsa industry with formal qualifications and/ or valid work histories both in Australia and overseas. The judging panel will have the full support and representation from the following dance organisations:

Ausdance
MrSalsa.com

3) Judges will be looking for couples maintaining the character of Salsa both from its roots and as it is danced today in clubs around the world.

4) Tricks and over-choreographed routines will not guarantee a win.

5) The judges will score each couple using a points system out of 10.


Judges will look for the following attributes:

- Timing and ability to stay on the beat
- Ability to express the music through dance

- Partner interaction
- Fluidity
- Outfits/appearance
- Creativity of moves
- Technique
- Choreography

6) An independent representative of Ausdance SA will be appointed to tally up the scores.

judges combined marks are final and NO discussion will be entered into after the winning couple has been announced.



PRIZES:

Salsa dance contestants will compete in a share of $5000 worth of cash and prizes.
Thanks to MRA entertainment all participants will receive a Putumayo CD prize for their much appreciated effort and talent.

National salsa dance champion award:

Professional Category:
1st Prize: $2000 + trophy
2nd Prize: Runner up trophy + salsa dance wear voucher
3rd Prize: trophy + Latin music pack

Amateur/ student Category:
1st Prize: $1000 + trophy
2nd Prize: Runner Up trophy + salsa dance wear voucher
3rd Prize: trophy + Latin music pack

People’s Choice National salsa dance award:

Professional Category:
Weekend accommodation package at The Hyatt Regency

Students/ Amateur Category:
Weekend accommodation package at The Hyatt Regency


RULES FOR SELECTIONS HEAT on Saturday 22 January 2005 at 8:30 pm:

1) The pre-selection heat on Saturday 22 January is a freestyle - couples only competition.

2) Each competing couple will pick the music they will dance to out of a hat prior to the freestyle competition. All tracks used will be well known and last no longer than 3 minutes. DJ will fade music at 3 minutes. Examples of salsa artists that will be used for freestyle competition: Fania All Stars, DLG, Sonora Carruseles, Maraca, Tito Nieves, Edwin Bonilla, Frankie Ruiz, Willie Colon, Los Van Van,
El Canario, Eddie Palmieri, Niche, Oscar D’ Leon, Conjunto Clasico, Celia Cruz. Etc.

3) 6 couples from each category (professional & amateur) will be chosen to compete in the finals on Sunday 23rd January 2005.
Judges have the right to select more couples if competition is fierce.

4) All contestants will be allocated a 10 minute rehearsal slot at the venue on Saturday afternoon at a time to be advised, once registration forms have been processed.

5) Contestants must be in attendance at the venue at least 1 hour before the competition. Please report to the stage door of the Adelaide Festival Centre where you will be collected by stage management.

 


RULES FOR CHOREOGRAPHED FINAL – Sunday 23rd January 2005 at 4:30 pm

1) In the finals, taking place on Sunday afternoon, the selected dance couples must perform
pre-prepared choreographed dance routines.

2) All competitors must have a prepared, 3 - 4minute (Including intros) choreography routine.

3) Tricks, acrobatics, shines and show moves are encouraged.

4) Routine must be 90% salsa (only 10% other dance styles permitted)

5) Any props required by dancers, must be authorised beforehand with the organisers.
(Details must be included on registration form, see below)

6) The judge’s decisions are final.

7) If a tie occurs judges reserve the right to introduce a freestyle dance off to assist in deciding on the winning couple.

8) The DJ/ sound operator will be under strict instructions to fade out all music at 4 minutes.
Performers MUST provide 2 burnt CD’s (on different brands of CD) of their performance music, recorded at the appropriate speed.
The track MUST BE the only track on the CD.
Music must be of the highest sound quality, distorted; bad quality sounding music will not be used.
The organizers will not be held responsible for damaged or missing CDs. Please put your name on CD and collect from stage management after competition has finished.

9) No rehearsal time will be allocated on Sunday (only on Saturday) and again all contestants need to be at the venue one hour before competition starts. Please report to the Festival Centre stage door and wait to be collected by Stage management.
